George Flagg Parkway, Des Moines, Iowa

George Flagg was originally designed as a widening project. But after discussions with the city it was redesigned as a total replacement. The existing roadway was crushed and re-used as special backfill mixing with fly ash to provide a stabilized base. Completed with full depth asphalt pavement the project was just over a mile in length, with very narrow grading limits. Work space was limited which made the crushing operation difficult. The material had to be trucked around and installed behind the crusher. Weather became a challenge as well, the project is within the Raccoon River flood plain and with heavy spring rains a portion of the project was flooded after the base course had been installed, but before surface could be placed. Work was completed June 2017.
