With constant and vigilant monitoring to ensure a quality product and Grimes Asphalt and Paving is dedicated attention to detail, the inevitable result is the complete satisfaction of its customers, new and old alike.

Asphalt Paving

Grimes Asphalt and Paving distinguishes itself by offering customers the expertise of in-house specialists who have the knowledge and experience to complete your paving needs. We do work for residential, commercial, municipal, and DOT customers.  Paving types include full depth multiple lift asphalt paving, overlays and resurfacing of existing pavement, thin lift asphalt, interlayer, and warm mix asphalt. We perform inspections evaluating soil and subgrades applying stabilization techniques when needed. With attention to drainage issues, we identify and resolve problems before they affect the final product. All this serves to ensure a high-quality end result and maintain a construction schedule without delays.

Asphalt Production

Grimes Asphalt and Paving produces asphalt materials for our own paving operation as well as for contractors, state, county, and city works customers. We design and provide a variety of specific-purpose mixes: Iowa DOT Certified Super Pave-based paving mixes, high performance cold mixes, warm mix, athletic use mixes, crushed recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), and interstate mixes, just to name a few.

The asphalt paving materials are tested and monitored by our own Iowa Department of Transportation-certified employees in a laboratory equipped with the latest in asphalt testing technology. All the materials used in the production of the pavement are sampled and tested in accordance with Iowa Department of Transportation Specifications (IDOT). During production and placement of the asphalt pavement, samples are taken and tested in our laboratory according to an established quality control program. The sampling and testing are performed by IDOT-certified lab technicians. Samples are also taken to an independent laboratory to further verify results. During placement of the HMA, a density machine is used to monitor compaction and to achieve the desired pavement density.

Milling/Pavement Scarification

Grimes Asphalt and Paving can mill existing pavements to any depth you need. Whether milling full depth to remove pavement or milling off a couple of inches to resurface. With a wide range of equipment, we have the right machine for your job. Depending on your needs, it might be preferable to mill the existing pavement prior to installing an overlay. However, not all the existing asphalt has to be removed, which stretches your pavement maintenance dollars.

PCC Paving and Curb and Gutters

Grimes Asphalt and Paving installs Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) curb and gutters, approaches, drainage flumes, sidewalks, and other associated PCC products to complete our customers’ paving needs. The capability to perform various concrete applications allows us to maintain tight schedules, keeping the project moving forward. Whether the job is a new parking lot that requires all-new curb and gutter, or a small section that needs repair, we can meet your needs.

Soil Stabilization

The overall strength and performance of a pavement is dependent not only on its design, but also on the load capacity of the subgrade, thus making the subgrade just as important as the paving on top. Grimes Asphalt and Paving recognizes the importance of proper subgrade compaction, working together with soil engineers and/or grading contractors, and utilizing the latest in equipment to achieve the highest level of performance.

Roller Compacted Concrete

Roller compacted concrete (RCC) is a stiff, zero-slump concrete mixture comprised of coarse and fine aggregates, Portland cement, fly ash, and water. Using our vibratory roller equipment and screed technologies, it can be placed in a manner similar to asphalt paving. RCC pavement is constructed without joints and does not require forms, finishing, surface texturing, joint sawing, or sealing. It also does not contain dowels or steel reinforcing.

Crack and Seating

The purpose of cracking and seating concrete pavement prior to overlaying it is to minimize the occurrence and severity of reflection cracks in the overlay caused by slab action. This is done by cracking the concrete slabs to reduce their effective length and then seating the cracked slabs to reestablish subgrade support. It is either opened to traffic after cracking to accomplish seating, or a proof roller can be used.

NewRoad Hybrid Polymer Asphalt Additive

NewRoad® hybrid polymer additive is an asphalt mixture additive that consists of structural hybrid polymer technology that improves the internal bonding of the asphalt mixture. The NewRoad® additive increases strength and moisture resistance and decreases rutting and cracking distresses. It has been lab and field tested for more than five years by multiple independent & university labs, including the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT), at Auburn University, the premier testing facility in the USA.

Recreational and Specialty Paving

Grimes Asphalt specializes in Athletic facilities, such as running tracks, tennis, Pickleball, and Basketball courts. These types of projects require an experienced contractor to achieve the difficult tolerances required.

Asphalt Recycling

Asphalt is 100% recyclable and clean, broken asphalt is accepted at our recycle yard free of charge.
