I-80 MISSOURI RIVER BRIDGE

This new river bridge was constructed to carry the westbound lanes of I-80 from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Omaha, Nebraska. The bridge is 2,478' in length and has 12 spans in 3 different units. The bridge has a maximum span of 425' and provides a roadway width of 84'. The main river span unit is made up of four spans of continuous haunched steel plate girders. A sub stringer system was utilized with the five main girders, which reached depths of over 21'. The two main river piers were supported on drilled shafts and the remaining piers on the existing Missouri River located immediately downstream from the new bridge. Jensen had built the substructure for the existing bridge under a contract with the IDOT in 1970.
